Wild Turkey Chicks!

Filed under: Vegetables — marysveggiegarden @ 6:37 pm

We have new turkey chicks! A wild hen and her five babies wandered through the front yard Saturday 7/7/2012. They were foraging about 150′ from the main road that fronts my property.

The hen’s tail was slightly spread and her wings were drooping; I think she was drying out from the rain a couple of hours earlier.

The family wandered into the flower bed. The chicks did not hesitate to zip under the fence protecting the hostas from deer though the fence stopped Momma. (Gotta put up a real deer fence.)

Eventually Momma decided to fly off the edge of the 7′ high wall. All chicks but one followed quickly. The smallest thought about it for a minute before jumping and buzzing his little wings in flight.

When we moved here in 1998 there were no turkeys. They first appeared a few years later; my earliest turkey picture is dated 2004.
