Sitting in the Garden

Lately I’ve been spending a fair amount of time sitting flat on my butt in the garden, in the path between the tomatoes and the corn.

Harvesting tomatoes sitting down.

It’s the only way I can harvest the cherry tomatoes. Overhead the tomato vines arch from one side and the corn stalks from the other. Both are 6′ tall but they meet 4-5′ off the ground – impassable.

I collect my equipment – a bag for the tomatoes, scissors and a container for bad foliage. I ease myself down onto the path.

I sit there, inching along. Looking for yellowed foliage – snip, snip. With fewer leaves I have a better chance seeing the bright orange glint of a ripe Sungold. Trying to snake my arm between the branches to nab the prize. There are only three plants but they are exceptionally dense this year.

It’s quiet under there. The plants muffle sounds coming from outside and most days the neighboring gardens are deserted. So I inch along, reaching and listening. Listening to the sounds of the bees – to the deep buzz of the mid-sized solitary bees and the slightly higher pitched buzz of the honey bees collecting pollen from the corn tassels. There are dozens of bees overhead. The buzzing melds together into a soothing hum.

It’s peaceful there, listening and looking. After a while I simply sit and listen.

Eventually I reach the end, turn around, and work my way back. It’s amazing how many tomatoes I’ve missed.

Today’s harvest: 1 pound of Sungold tomatoes.

    • The bigger ones are barely starting to show some color. My fingers are crossed.

  2. Your comment about missed tomatoes made me smile. I do that with weeding all the time- think i got them all, only to find more.
