Its a plan…

It is almost a month since my last garden picture. Snow melt is progressing slowly and the weather continues very cold.

3/16/2015 Finally I managed to open the gate yesterday.

3/16/2015 Yesterday I managed to open the garden gate which has been frozen in the mud since mid-January.

With the gate back in operation, I can get in to prune the raspberries. I want to plant snow peas in 2 weeks, but the area is still deep in snow.

This weekend was spent laying out my gardens on paper.  The plans are not finished. I recently got some free seed at a seed swap with dates of 2011 & 2012 and realized they should be germination tested before being put on my garden map.

There is no rush to finish the map with the garden is still under a thick blanket of snow.

Here is what I plan to plant in 2015. It looks like a lot of stuff but for vegetables such as brassicas, peppers and tomatoes I grow only 2-4 plants of any variety. I like to try new varieties but don’t put too much space into anything new.

  1. I like to try new things but I don’t give new veggies much room either. I hope you can get your snow peas planted in time!

    • You are more adventurous trying new things than I. But if something doesn’t do well because of disease, it is worth trying a different variety, or several side-by-side to see how they all do in the same conditions.

  2. What an impressive variety of veggies! Sure sound better than all of the packaged food one sees on the grocery shelves. The snow has melted off of my well-mulched garlic plot which was planted last October; perhaps the deep mulch had something to do with the melting there and before all of the surrounding snow. Since I haven’t grown parsnips before, I look forward to planting them later this spring and harvesting them next fall. Perhaps I’ll get some snow peas in the ground in early April — Our remaining snow will melt eventually!!!

  4. That is a great list – lots of variety, for sure! I’m relatively new at this so I’m still trying to figure out what my favourites are and what does well in our garden. I made the mistake that both you and Dave obviously avoid by planting larger quantities of “untested” veg and then kicking myself when they don’t do well (or I don’t like them) and think that I could have used a good chunk of that space for a proven veg. Well, at least I’m learning, although sometimes the hard way 😉

  5. The Green Meat Radish looks interesting. Is that one of the new veggies you’re trying?

    • Green Meat was new last year, leftover seed this year. I planted it mid-August after harvesting the edamame soy. August 1 would have been better as most were medium-small. It is similar to a daikon radish, but with green skin. I prefer the sweetness and color of Watermelon radish, but the Green Meat grew better from a late planting.

  6. I leaves my garden gates open in the winter. Otherwise I still wouldn’t be able to open them. Even without all the snow we have had sometimes they get iced up.

    • There are too many deer, I wouldn’t want them to form the habit of going inside the garden.

  7. Impressive list of plants you have chosen. I see a lot of familiar names. Like you, I tend to plant a little of a lot because I like to experiment and I like the variety.
